Social networking for Emergencies...

Emergency response entails a widespread tactical effort by countless government agencies. Too often, citizens are left out of the loop and have to rely on mass media, cell phones, and Web sites for emergency information. Microsoft Vine is a new social networking tool, designed to help its users keep tabs on people and places. Currently in a beta test in Seattle, the service lets you enter a location and see news reports aggregated from 20,000 sources, and from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. You can enter people you want to track into Microsoft Vine, and then receive an e-mail, text message, or an update about them in the Vine dashboard -- which runs on Windows only. Disaster victims with Macs are out of luck.
A map overlay in Vine shows the cities you want to track and the locations of people you have entered into the software. As with Twitter, you can update your status -- which feeds directly to your Facebook account -- and let people know where you are. You can also issue a report with emergency contact information, where you are going, and how long you will be gone. The potential strength of a system like this is that it cuts through the clutter of social networking updates about who won the latest soccer game or which band you like -- it is focused entirely on emergency situations.
But Microsoft Vine will only work if it becomes the most popular portal for updating your whereabouts in an emergency. People have already used Twitter to alert family and friends about emergencies. However, Microsoft can draw from its experience on the EagleOne project (which is more of a coordinated data consolidation project for emergency response) to beef up the Vine social network with more data about catastrophic events. Vine apparently does not use traditional GPS-based location-awareness techniques. Twitter's iffy reliability makes it less than ideal for critical emergency communications; Microsoft promises vaguely that Vine will be more robust.

USB 2.4 GHZ RF WIRELESS TINY KEYBOARD WITH TRACK BALL...

Brando is back with yet another interesting device for those who do plenty of traveling - the USB 2.4 GHZ RF Wireless Tiny Keyboard with Trackball....With this combination device, you won’t need to tote a mouse with you any more, although folks who deal with more precise movements in their line of work on their notebooks will think otherwise. The keyboard comes with 56 keys alongside 29 hotkeys, where it is connected to your computer through the 2.4GHz spectrum. Being small enough to be carried around (with at least half of it sticking out of your jeans pocket), the USB 2.4Ghz RF Wireless Tiny Keyboard With Trackball has an operating distance of 10 meters. We would’ve liked to see the USB receiver come in a much smaller size though. You will have to fork out 55$ a pop for this.

Hands Free Devices for Refurbished Cell Phones...
It is becoming more and more common for states to pass laws that make it illegal for drivers to talk on their cellphones while driving if they do not use a hands-free device. People caught without a hands-free device are issued a ticket and are forced to pay a fine for their first offense. Repeat offenders face harsher penalties with each repeat offense. The theory behind these new laws is that they allow drivers to keep both hands free to steer, shift, etc. and allow the driver to focus more on driving instead of holding a phone against their ear.
The most common hands free device is a Bluetooth earpiece. This wireless solution simply clips over the ear, allowing you to speak without holding the phone. To use a Bluetooth device, just associate it with any Bluetooth capable cell phone. Today, most new cell phones, as well as many used cell phones, are Bluetooth capable.
If you own an older used cell phone, it may lack Bluetooth technology. Do not worry, however, as there are still hands-free solutions that will work with any kind of phone. The most common is a wired headset that resembles ear buds and connects to your phone with via a headphone-like jack. These devices perform the same function as a Bluetooth headset except they use a wire to transfer data to and from your phone and are also generally cheaper. They are available for nearly any model of phone made in the past 10 years, so even if you’re still using an older refurbished sprint cell phone, you will be able to find a hands-free solution.
A hands free accessory is not just beneficial for driving. Even if you live in a state that does not require hands-free devices for driving, chances are you will find some benefit from being able to talk on your phone without using your hands, such as being able to type while on the phone (not while you’re driving!).
Another choice if you are looking for a way to make your used blackberry hands free is to use a plug and play kit for your car, which usually draws power from your cigarette lighter. This tiny attachment contains a microphone and speaker, and can be attached to your dashboard, air conditioning vent, or another area in your car. Unlike a Bluetooth headset, you need not attach anything to your ear when using a car kit. While some of these are wireless and rely on Bluetooth technology, others can be attached with a wire to your cell phone.
The bottom line is that there are numerous options for hands free devices for all phones and they should not prevent you from taking advantage of the great deals you can get on used phones. Hands-free devices can be found for nearly any phone with a headphone jack and/or Bluetooth. Even if you live in a state that does not currently have a hands-free law, they probably will eventually, and the other benefits are often worth it.

Google Releases My Tracks Application...
But the feature which takes the spotlight among all the other features is that it lets you share your activities with friends, family members, infact the whole world by making use of the ever famous Google Maps.
What is the thing that makes this application a unique one? Unlike My Tracks, various GPS receivers require you to go through a lengthy process. You have to insert and plug a separate device into a computer, install the software, transfer, convert and then upload you track related data to the web.
With My Tracks, you no longer need to have multiple devices while going out on a ride and other outdoor activities. You can quite easily share your rides spontaneously with any one you desire. You just need to record and upload your track directly from your phone. You can share it via an Email or even you can use Twitter.
While recording tracks, you can:
- See location / progress on a map
- Monitor real-time statistics: time, distance, speed, elevation
- Create waypoints
- Create statistics waypoints (splits tracks into subtracks)
To share tracks, you can:
- Upload to Google Maps.
- Upload to Google Docs.
- Email as a Google My Map link.
- Embed Google Map on a website.
- Email as .gpx or .kml attachments.
- Export as .gpx or .kml to phone SD card.
- Tweet your My Map link on Twitter using Twidroid.
In short, My Tracks is an application that enables you to keep your loved ones up to date with your current location and activities while requiring minimum effort from your side.

Windows 7 not likely to contain Ultimate Extras...
Since the launch of Windows Vista, Ultimate Extras has brought nothing but embarrassment for the software giants. Even though Microsoft accepted the fact of Ultimate Extras not being up to the mark and apologized for it. Even it made some improvements to it. Still Microsoft was not delivering as per promised.
Majority of the users claim that they chose and went on with Vista Ultimate not because of the presence of Ultimate Extras. Microsoft is hoping that users will make the same decision when going for Windows 7 Ultimate, as it will not be cotain Ultimate Extras.
Windows 7 Ultimate is not intended to be sold at retail, instead it is targeted to be on sale during some promotional periods. Rumor says that Ultimate flavor of Windows 7 is expected to be $80 cheaper than Vista Ultimate, going for an amount of $320. What remains to be seen is how PC makers offer it, but it is highly likely to be an option in their more powerful and advanced models.

CaptionTube - A caption editor for a You Tube V.D.O
Are you thinking that you can add captions in just the English language. Well think again. Captions can be written in languages besides English as well.
Another thing that is interesting about this site is that not only it allows you to caption your uploaded videos, it allows you to upload any video and insert custom made captions into it.
If you want to export these captions, then it is done by exporting the captions as an XML file and can be imported to YouTube at a later stage.
The site has been developed by John Skidgel (hats off to you), a user experience designer at Google.
The benefit or the need for it can be better understood by a research from PLYMedia. According to that research, adding subtitles increases the probability of users watching a subtitled video by 40%..
Here is a summarized list of all the features
- Offer viewers a transcript to read.
- Improve discoverability and searching for sales and training videos.
- Create and edit closed captions in multiple languages.
- Export captions and upload them to your YouTube account.
- Simple and secure sign in using your Google account.
Ubuntu.....cloud computing???
For those who wish to manage clouds, Ubuntu will apparently contain tools that leverage the Amazon APIs.
The desktop goals are primarily around “first impressions,” with Shuttleworth indicating that “boot will be beautiful.”
He also promises that the appearance of Ubuntu will change significantly:
The desktop will have a designer’s fingerprints all over it - we’re now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options. It sounds like the majority of the work on the server side in Karmic Koala will be around cloud computing.
The actual text can be summarized as follows:
Ubuntu server will target promoting cloud computing through entirely open-source software.
Canonical will create standard Amazon Machine Images from Karmic Koala, essentially creating “ready-to-run” appliances that will serve as “standard builds” to the Amazon community.
Shuttleworth says one goal is to speed up the boot process in Ubuntu 9.10, while possibly using a new splash screen. Canonical will also be refining the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface for mini-laptops like the Dell Inspiron Mini.
The server edition of Karmic Koala will feature support for Amazon’s EC2 APIs, and will also use the Eucalyptus project to allow you to host cloud based apps in your own data center.

You tube.......Great news:):)
"With respect to how it’ll get monetized, our first priority is on the advertising side. We do expect over time to see micropayments and other forms of subscription models coming as well. We’ll be announcing additional things in that area literally very, very soon. We are making very good progress now with small, medium, and even large-scale video studios."
Recently Google signed a partnership deal with Sony Pictures to show full length movies. Under that deal films will be shown using a video player from Crackle, which happens to be Sony Pictures owned website. Besides this deal, Google has also successfully made deals with CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz and BBC in their effort to acquire TV and film contents.
It was also expected that Google will incorporate the following changes which we have already covered.
